Role of Designer in 21st Century

Designers work in many fields such as fashion, architecture, graphic and many more and the contribution from designers are highly welcomed. The real work of a designer involves process that brings greatest possible outcomes to solve an existing problem. Adding artistic or aesthetic value is a part of the development process of designer but this differs from the work of artist who freely express themselves. Designer must be capable of receiving important information from specialist like engineer and decide the designing process.(Brandon,K, 2015)

Designer’s job is related to illustration and it helps to deliver the ideas in visual form rather than words which can face difficulties to interpret something. By doing visually, anyone can understand the design precisely and work on it. This improves communication process. Designer today must be able to see a big picture or problem and analyse the information so that the outcome will not become a burden to society or creating more waste rather actually solving a problem. For example, water bottle is designed to bring the water every day and quench the thirst. But, it is also non-biodegradable and harmful to nature. The designer should solve an existing problem without creating another problem. (Brandon,K, 2015)

“We have seen an increase in the need for all kind of designer and substantial surge in compensation for both junior and senior level design talent”. (Edward Hooper, Senior Executive Recruiter, New York)

The designer’s job is to find the right people with right information through research or from experts. Then actual work of design. The last part is, giving information from finished product to the right people. Creativity is expected in designer’s work in producing excellent designs. Creative work is on the rise and risks are being taken by designers to give life to innovation. The designer also must be up to date to current world trend and continually sharpening the insights to get fresh ideas. (Brandon,K, 2015)

Various role of designer:
  • Visual/Marketing designer
-Develops layout and make aesthetic choice
-Choose colour palettes
-Create logos, business card, brochures
  • User experience (UX) designer
-Creative intuitive design for complex software and internet product
  • Mobile App designer
-Has knowledge in iOS and Android design

Found Object and Its Context

Found object is translation from French, 'object trouve' that means objects or products with non-art function that transferred to art context and made part of an artwork. In 1900s, the artist merged the found object into sculpture as an artistic gesture. One example is Marchel Duchamp's Fountain, 1917, which is the inverted placement of porcelain urine and signed on as R MUTT. (Artspace LLC, 2017)

Figure 1: Fountain (Marchel Duchamp, 1917)

Figure 2: Bottle Rack (Marchel Duchamp, 1914)

The artist finds an abondoned object or from garbage and tranform them into an artwork by either combining or manipulating them until it has an artistic value. Typical found objects includes earth, stone, sand, shell, wood, newspaper cuttings, piece of glass, fragment of metals, pieces of textile fabric, bicycle handbar, and etc which normally the object is from a part of something. Found objects are used in many form of arts such as painting, assemblage, installation art and sculpture. One example is 'Head of bull' by Pablo Picasso which is made using cycle handle bar and saddle. (visual-arts-cork.com, 2017)

Figure 3: Head of bull (Picasso, 1943)

Figure 4: Bicycle wheel (Marchel Duchamp, 1913)

Figure 5: Fur-lined Teacup (Meret Oppenheim, 1936)

The artist must see an aesthatic element in that found object.

Contemporary designs and analysis

What design consists of?

A good design fulfills its purpose than focusing more on aesthatic value. It also has a new innovative design which does not existed before. Good design uses materials in most effective ways to solve existing problems. Using fewer resources is the key for good contemporary design. Good design delivers a positive emotional impact on society and has intrinsic value.(Topdesignmag.com, 2010)

Design Solution:

LED Snowboard

 Figure 1: LED snowboard

This LED snowboard is designed by 3 Enomoto, a Japanese company. This snowboard consists of  24 bit full colour spectrum and motion controlled. Adding aesthetic value to the snowboard makes the snowboards more interesting in design of it. It makes the look more appealing and attractive to the eyes. Apart from it, it also can be used in night time and become the light for the passionate people who likes to do it at night. It also has bluetooth attached to it which can be connected to music player, and the light will change according to the sound beats. (Transworld snowboarding, 2017)

Figure 2:  LED snowboard

The light sequence will be changed according to the motion of the snowboards as it sensed by motion senser installed to it. This is great because the rider will know when he or she is making mistake.

Materials:

Features:

  • 2 durable, flexible, 1m long LED strips with 24 LEDs each
  • Controller includes 19 lighting modes consisting of chases, strobes, & acceleration (motion) response
  • Simple single-button controller controls all functions
  • Goes to sleep without movement to save battery power & wakes up automatically
  • Mounts with very strong, but removable, adhesive tape
  • Binding spacers to protect LED strips
  • 8 hrs continuous use w/ long-life rechargeable battery
  • Weight: 1.25 lbs w/ marginal effect on ride
  • Waterproof

The light strips and LED controller are binded to the snowboard by high-bonding 3M VHB adhesive tape. The LED snowboard system adds safety since it can be seen clearly at night and reduces the possibility of collision on the slope.  The disadvantage can be running out of battery after 8 hours and recharging of it. Other than that, the safety cannot be reassured if the whole snowboard crushed during accident and the rider get into serious injury.

For further improvement, GPS can be attached to the microcomputer, so that when the snowboard rider got crushed in the avalanche, the GPS can be tracked and the rider can be rescued. Other than that, temperature sensor can be attached to detect the temperature through the light colour. In future, the knowledge of levitation of the board can be introduced upon technology discovering so that people can fly on snow. It is not impossible.

Engineering Design process

Engineering was defined as the application of practical and scientific knowledge to the solving of a problem through the use of a methodical process. The engineering design process is a series of steps that engineers follow when they are trying to solve a problem and design a solution for something; it is a methodical approach to problem solving. (Malakye, 2004).

Step 1 – UNDERSTAND – Define the Problem
Step 2 – EXPLORE – Do Background Research
Step 3 – DEFINE – Determine Solution Specifications
Step 4 – IDEATE – Generate Concept Solutions
Step 5 – PROTOTYPE – Learn How Your Concepts Work
Step 6 – CHOOSE – Determine a Final Concept
Step 7 – REFINE – Do Detailed Design
Step 8 – PRESENT – Get Feedback and Approval
Step 9 – IMPLEMENT – Implement the Detailed Solution
Step 10 – TEST – Does the Solution Work?
Step 11 – ITERATE

From this activity, the researcher learned about design process and design solution.

Discussion on Museum, gallery and heritage

From the discussion with lecturer, the researcher learned that museum is a place where old artefacts are displayed and it is mostly of non-profit organisation that opens for public. Museum is associated with timeline in history in which the objects displayed play important role to preserve the identity and the evidence of past history. The documentation in museum is very usefel for young researchers and students to learn more about history and its value. Museum also becomes the symbol of a certain civilisation. Example of museum are National Museum, Kuala Kelawang Museum and so on.

Figure 1: National Museum

Figure 2: Example of artefacts - South African Zulu Artefacts

Gallery is modern space in 21st century where it is used to exhibit artist's artwork. It is either can be of profit and non-profit organisation. The gallery is divided into two category, either it is private/ self funded or sponsored. National Gallery and Balai Seni Lukis Negara are examples of galleries which are reserved for famous artists. Artist can use gallery to exhibit his work solo (minimum 30 pieces of artworks) or in groups of 3 artists.

Figure 3: Balai Seni Lukis Negara

Figure 4: Petronas Art Gallery (Menagha, 2016)
Figure 5:Lamuria #2 (Ali Mabuha Rahamad, 1987)

Heritage is the term comes from the word inheritance in which a certain assests are inherited and kept. One of the example of cultural heritage are monuments, buildings and traditional attires. Monuments are buildings that protected to remember the memory and history behind that.Tugu Negara is one of the monument that build to remember the memories of soldiers who died in war during Japanese involvement. Some of other heritage that emphasizes on arthictectural values are Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China and Pyramid. From the view of traditional attires and garments, 'songket is considered as one of the cultural heritage for Malay people.

Figure 6: Tugu Negara Malaysia

Figure 7: Taj Mahal

Figure 8: songket

As a conclusion, the researcher learned a lot about the terms and concepts on museum, gallery and heritage which are useful in future.
