Task 4 Snake and ladder

We were asked to do snake and ladder transferred into other medium like glass, wood but not on paper board. My group decided to do it on a wooden board. The snake and ladder is changed into a gold mining concept. The ladder is changed into pulley that goes up and snake is changed into broken railway track that lead to fall. The target group for this project is children above 5 years old.

Research did on mining to find out what are the tools and environment exist in a mining site:

Sketches:

Materials: Wooden board, acrylic colour palette, brush, paper clay, glue, pencil, ruler

Figure 2: Wooden board 2x2 feet.

We measured the wooden board to draw the boxes inside it. A square has 7cmx 7cm measurement.

The concept for the snake and ladder game board is mining. So we tried to include as many as things find in a mining area like a tunnel, railways, pulleys, gear, spade, materials, gold or crystal and etc.

The background is colourful to attract the attention of children.

For the dice, I replaced the normal cube dice with a wheel that can be rotated. The wheel has the gear feature to show that gears are used in mining vehicles like drott and bulldozer.

The wheel progress:

The design did in Krita and printed out. I did it just roughly because it is going to be cut out and paste on a box.

I attached a flat wood with a long wood to make the pillar for wheel with a glue.

For the playing the game, I made mini mining carts on Krita with 4 colours, red, green, yellow and blue. I will make it in 3d form.

The game board was later filled with hand drawn illustration with markers. I added the tracks for the mining carts.

Later. I draw tracks on a plastic cover and paste it for the slide down.

For some decorations, I traced some of materials, tool, people in mining site on a plastic cover. Then, I cut and paste it.

For climbing part, I hammered nails and thread to produce pulley.

The mining carts will be placed on the cardboard, and when the knot is pulled downwards, the cart will move up.

The game board can be improved ti be better. One of that is replacing the tokens, pulley, and the nails with plastic material so that it will last long and reduce injuries. Other than that, the boxes can be filled with instructions, facts or questions for the children to answer. For example, when the token landed on certain box, the children will be ask to sing a song, or dance that will make the environment more cheerful and happy. Other than that, the material wood can be replaced with clothes or mat so that it easily can be folded and kept, or wash. Children also can sleep on it when they feel tired. To further improvise, the game board concept can be changed to space, where the children itself will be travelling on a trolley and encounter all the level, same like roller coaster. Falling happens when there are obstacles into a place full of candies, or when to go up, they will be hiking or using flying fox, which make the environment more joyful.A huge place will be installed with a setting of mining, and the dice will be roll through apps in a gadget.

From this activity, I learn to be innovative and creative to come up with different concept.
